What Is Independent Study?

This program is designed as an alternative opportunity for student to complete their junior high course requirements and high school diploma requirements.  It is independent of a classroom setting.

What Are the Requirements?

Student Responsibility:  in order to make progress, the students must complete a minimum of 20 hours of homework each week.  This includes completing the outlined course work, taking tests, and working on the computer.  Students must report to the teacher for all scheduled meetings and notify the teacher if they are unable to attend a session.  THERE ARE NO EXCUSED ABSENCES IN INDEPENDENT STUDY!  Students are expected to complete all coursework outlined in a master agreement and as assigned on a weekly basis.

Parent Responsibility:  parents need to monitor daily the student’s progress, provide transportation, and contact the teacher immediately when circumstances may prohibit the student from completing assigned work.

School Responsibility:  The teacher will evaluate and determine appropriate coursework and provide materials to meet the student’s goals.  All course objectives are consistent with established California and Los Banos Unified School District Governing Board standards as outlined in the course descriptions.

Time:  Regular attendance to meetings is critical to student success, as well as spending adequate time completing assignments.  It is also expected that students attend any state testing sessions outside of their regular appointment time, as well as tutorial sessions and group project sessions.

What Is Virtual Instruction?

If Independent Study is not right for you, but you need an alternative to the traditional classroom, we also offer virtual instruction.  Virtual Education  is an online web based experience with optional daily classroom support in the open lab, five days a week. Students have 24/7 access to their curriculum and may work on it at any time!  A certificated teacher is present to assist the students, evaluate appropriate course work, and provide support to meet the student’s educational goals.  Courses are assigned according to student needs and according to the semester time available.
