The Community
Los Banos, with approximately 40,000 people, is one of the fastest-growing communities in California. Situated ideally at the junction of State Routes 152 (east/west corridor) and 165 (north/south corridor), and just five miles from California’s premiere highway artery, Interstate 5. Los Banos has been described as an oasis of friendly people on the road to just about anywhere. Centrally located in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, Los Banos is less than a two-hour drive from San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, and the Monterey Peninsula. Yosemite National Park is just a two and one-half hour drive away. Airports and business/industrial centers in Fresno and San Jose are about an hour's drive.
Agriculture is the lifeblood of the town. Cotton, cantaloupes, tomatoes and other crops are grown in nearby fields in one of the State’s most productive agricultural areas. Dairies and livestock operations also provide jobs for many area residents.
Homesites are being developed with sale prices ranging from $175,000 to $450,000. Apartments and home rentals range from $750 to $2500 per month.
The town and its environs offer a variety of recreational opportunities including fishing, boating, sailing, and camping at the Los Banos Creek Detention Reservoir, San Luis Reservoir, and O’Neill Forebay. There is waterfowl hunting in the grasslands and at state and national refuges.
The Los Banos Campus of Merced College offers a variety of classes on a year-round basis, serving more than 1,000 students on the west side of Merced County. Classes are offered both during the day and during the evening.
